What is otoplasty?

Protruding ears don't cause any functional problems such as hearing loss Otoplasty is carried out to improve aesthetic appearance and to provide higher self-esteem. It is important to note that otoplasty has no effect on patient's hearing.

What can be causes of protruding ears?

In most people, protruding or prominent ears are caused by an underdeveloped antihelical fold. When the antihelical fold does not form correctly, it causes the helix (the outer rim of the ear) to stick out. Most people with protruding ears also have a deep central cartilage part (concha), (the bowl-shaped space just outside the opening of the ear canal), which pushes the entire ear away from the side of the head. Ears can protrude as a result of facial and head trauma. Otoplasty is popular among the patients of different age: parents are taking their children to have otoplasty done as protruding ears cab be a reason for teasing by peers and youngsters who are very sensitive to their appearance during puberty; adults also ask for otoplasty as they strive to get rid of the complex of having prominent ears for years.

Course of the surgery

The incision is made behind the ear. Excessive tissues are removed during the surgery, the conchal cartilage is softened and fixed in a different position to bring the entire ear closer to the side of the head.

Post-surgical period and healing

Healing and scaring If a local anaesthesia was applied the patients is discharged the same day. The otoplasty results are visible right after the surgery. Though after otoplasty redness and mild bruising of ears can be visible, bruising disappears in 2 weeks. As the incisions were done in the posterior surface of the ear the scars are not visible. Sutures and dressing application Following otoplasty, a bulky dressing is used to aid healing and to ensure protection, support and comfort. Usually, that dressing is needed day and night for two weeks (and two weeks more during the night). One week later when the sutures are removed, dressing is not necessary, however a headband should be used for 2 weeks every night to support the ears until the complete healing and the risk of complications is gone. Physical activity and harmful habits The ears with applied dressings should be protected from any type of force, also it necessary to avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 3 months. It also recommended avoid sleeping lying on the side for at least several months. Abstain from hazardous habits – alcohol and tobacco interfere with healing process.
