A buttock lift, also called a gluteoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the buttock and waist area by improving its contour and shape.
A buttock lift improves and/or removes excess, sagging buttock skin that has developed as a result of weight loss, ageing and gravity, or genetics. During a buttock lift, excess skin and fat are removed from the waist area. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look.

Effectiveness of Buttock Augmentation with Fat or Implants
Many women dream of having soft, curvy, and feminine body contours. When genetics do not provide the desired shape, cosmetic surgery can help achieve these goals. Buttock augmentation, either with fat transfer or implants, has become an increasingly popular procedure for enhancing body proportions.
Who is a candidate for buttock augmentation?
Women with sufficient body fat can achieve a fuller buttock appearance through fat transfer, which also allows for contouring of other areas such as the waist and thighs. For women with very low body fat, silicone implants may be the preferred solution, as exercise alone may not provide the desired results. Implants add volume to the upper buttocks, creating a smooth, rounded, and well-defined shape.
Preparing for buttock augmentation
Before surgery, it is important to discuss your goals and expectations with your plastic surgeon. Based on your individual case, the surgeon will select the appropriate implant size or amount of fat, determine the best incision locations, and order all necessary preoperative tests. Your surgeon will also explain the procedure, recovery process, and potential risks.
It is recommended to stop smoking at least a few weeks before and after surgery, as it can affect healing. Be sure to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking.
How the procedure is performed
Buttock augmentation typically takes 2–3 hours under general anesthesia.
In modern techniques, implants are placed within the gluteal muscle, which provides additional support and a more natural contour while reducing the risk of displacement. Incisions are usually made along the buttock fold, upper thigh, or near the sacrum. Implants are positioned in the upper portion of the buttocks to minimize the risk of nerve injury and other complications.
Recovery and postoperative care
Healing and scarring
After surgery, the surrounding tissue may feel tight or sore, and pain can be managed with prescribed medications. Swelling and bruising are normal and will gradually subside. The incisions typically leave minimal, inconspicuous scars.
Special care instructions
Patients must wear compression garments for approximately six weeks to manage swelling. Sitting directly on the buttocks should be avoided for the first 2–3 weeks. For several months, intense physical activity, lying on the back, or applying direct pressure to the buttocks should be minimized.
Expected results
Fuller and more rounded buttocks are visible immediately after surgery, but the final outcome will become apparent over several months as swelling decreases and tissues fully heal. Results are long-lasting, but following the surgeon’s recommendations, maintaining a healthy diet, and keeping up with appropriate physical activity are essential to preserve the outcome.
