Knee Replacement
Surgery

Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This surgery may be considered for someone who has severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.

The choice of implant is individual and based on your medical history and current condition of your knee. We use high-quality implants from companies like DePuy, Zimmer-Biomet, Smith & Nephew

On top of that, in our clinic, you can choose Signature™ system. The Signature™ system utilizes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) instead of two-dimensional X-rays. It allows creating personalized positioning guides for total knee replacement. By that mean surgeons can more accurately position knee implants.  Main benefits of the Signature™ system are: it is less invasive procedure, shorter surgery time, improved implant placement precision.

The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.

Knee replacement surgery (arthroplasty) is a common operation that involves replacing a damaged, worn or diseased knee with an artificial joint.

Adults of any age can be considered for a knee replacement, although most are carried out on people between the ages of 60 and 80.

A smaller operation called a partial knee replacement tends to be performed on younger people aged between 55 and 64 where the artificial joint is expected to need redoing within 10 years.

What is a
knee Replacement

Consider if you have any of the following:

  • Severe knee pain that limits activities such as walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of chairs.

  • Moderate to severe knee pain while resting during the day or night.

  • Knee inflammation that is not helped by medications or rest.

  • Knee deformity such as bowing in or out of the knee.

  • Knee stiffness that makes it difficult to bend or straighten the knee.

  • Unsatisfactory relief from NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

  • An intolerance to analgesic drugs (pain medications).

  • Unsatisfactory results from other conservative treatments tried.

If you answered yes to most or all of the questions, you may be a candidate for knee replacement surgery.

Types of knee replacement surgery

There are 2 main types of surgery:

  • total knee replacement – both sides of your knee joint are replaced

  • partial (half) knee replacement – only 1 side of your joint is replaced in a smaller operation with a shorter hospital stay and recovery period.

Results

For most people, knee replacement provides pain relief, improved mobility and a better quality of life.

After knee replacement patients can leave the hospital within 3-5 days.

Three to six weeks after surgery, you generally can resume most daily activities.

After recovery, you can engage in various low-impact activities, such as walking, swimming, golfing or biking. But you should avoid higher impact activities — such as jogging, skiing, tennis and sports that involve contact or jumping.

Most of the activities resumed 6 weeks after surgery. The majority of the patients recovered after 3 months, although it might take up to 6 months.

Risks

Knee replacement surgery, like any surgery, carries risks. They include:

  • Infection

  • Blood clots in the leg vein or lungs

  • Heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Nerve damage

In some cases, the new knee joint may not be completely stable and further surgery may be needed to correct it.
