Gastric Bypass: Your Path to Better Health

Gastric bypass, or "Roux-en-Y gastric bypass," is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting it directly to the small intestine. In this procedure, the doctor closes off part of the stomach, leaving only a small pouch for food. Then, the stomach pouch is connected to the middle part of the small intestine. This allows food to "bypass" or reroute around a portion of the stomach and small intestine.

What you need to know about Gastric Bypass Surgery

Obesity is a chronic condition associated with the accumulation of excessive fat in the body. Obesity is designated with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 and over. Gastric bypass surgery,  is a bariatric procedure that helps slim down by changing how your stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat.

Gastric Bypass Surgery is recognized as the “Gold Standard” of bariatric surgery worldwide. It promotes weight loss by combining restrictive and malabsorptive components. The board-certified surgeon creates a tiny stomach pouch and then bypasses a portion of the digestive tracts.

Unlike diet and exercise, gastric bypass is a fast, powerful, and long-term solution to fighting obesity as it changes the body’s metabolic thermostat. Patients can lose over 78% of their excess body weight in 1.5 to 2 years after the operation.

Is Gastric Bypass right for me?

Gastric bypass is better suited for patients with severe acid reflux and GERD.

However, if you have ulcer problems or are taking Aspirin/Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) on a regular basis, gastric sleeve or duodenal switch are better options for you.

The reason is that there is no conventional routine to detect ulcers in the “stoma” or so-called “blind” stomach. Our surgeons review every patient’s health history thoroughly to determine if they could benefit from this weight loss procedure.

  • BMI of 35+ or with comorbidities

  • Ages between 16 and 65 (case by case basis)

  • Realistic expectations regarding the weight loss results.

Gastric Bypass surgery

Gastric bypass or  “Roux-en-Y gastric bypass,” is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. For this surgery the doctor closes off part of the stomach, leaving only a small pouch for food. Then connects the stomach pouch to the middle part of the small intestine. This allows food to “bypass” or reroute around a part of the stomach and small intestine.

Gastric bypass is surgery to help you lose weight if you’re very overweight. You may be offered weight loss surgery if you: have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more have a BMI of 30 to 40 and a condition, such as: gastroesophageal, reflux disease , heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,  sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, stroke, Infertility. Gastric bypass is typically done only after you’ve tried to lose weight by improving your diet and exercise habits

About Surgery. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, and it takes 2-3 hours. Mostly surgery is performed laparoscopically, which involves inserting instruments through makes 4 to 6 small incisions in the abdomen.

The surgeon views the operation on a video screen. Your surgeon uses staples to divide your stomach into a small upper section and a larger bottom section. The top section of your stomach (called the pouch) is where the food you eat will go. The pouch is about the size of a walnut. It holds only about 28 grams of food. Normally, your stomach can hold about 3 pints of food.
Then surgeon connects a small part of your smal.l intestine to a small hole in your pouch. The food you eat will now travel from the pouch into this new opening and into your small intestine. As a result, your body will absorb fewer calories.

Post Surgery. Immediately after gastric bypass surgery, you may have liquids but no solid food as your stomach and intestines begin to heal. You’ll then follow a special diet plan that changes slowly from liquids to pureed foods. After that, you can eat soft foods, then move on to firmer foods as your body is able to tolerate them. You may have many restrictions or limits on how much and what you can eat and drink. Your doctor will recommend you take vitamin and mineral supplements after surgery, including a multivitamin with iron, calcium and vitamin B-12.
