Hip Replacement Cost & Info

During a hip replacement surgery, the natural hip joint is substituted with an artificial implant to improve mobility and reduce pain.

Movement is a vital part of everyday life, so even a minor restriction can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. One common condition that causes this is hip joint wear.

The hip joints serve two main purposes: they allow the body to move and provide stability. They enable walking forwards and backwards, moving side to side, and twisting, while also absorbing impact to the upper body, which is essential for overall health. Over time, the cartilage covering the joints wears down, leading to pain and stiffness. In most cases, the only effective treatment is to replace the damaged joint with a prosthetic implant.

Which hip implants are considered the best?

During hip replacement surgery, both the ball and the socket of the joint are replaced with high-quality implants. Titanium has long been recognized for its proven performance and remains one of the most trusted materials among surgeons. The durability of an implant depends on various factors, including a person’s weight and level of physical activity.

At BaltiClinic, our surgeons use only top-tier implants — titanium Zimmer Biomet and ceramic-metal Smith & Nephew systems. Both are known for their outstanding biocompatibility, advanced design, and proven clinical results. These implants combine decades of surgical expertise with the latest technological innovations, ensuring optimal outcomes tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

Main Causes of Hip Pain

One of the primary reasons for ongoing hip pain and reduced mobility is arthritis, most often appearing as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis develops gradually as the hip joint wears down with age. It commonly affects people over 50 and those with a family history of arthritis. Over time, the cartilage that cushions the bones thins out, allowing the bones to rub together and cause discomfort, stiffness, and loss of flexibility. In some cases, mild irregularities in hip formation during childhood can contribute to earlier joint wear.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joint lining, leading to persistent inflammation. This ongoing process damages the cartilage and causes pain, swelling, and stiffness. It’s the most prevalent type among inflammatory joint diseases.

Post-traumatic arthritis may occur after a hip injury or fracture. Damage sustained during the trauma can gradually lead to cartilage breakdown, resulting in pain and reduced joint movement over time.

In some instances, an injury such as a hip fracture or dislocation can interrupt blood flow to the femoral head, leading to a condition known as osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis). When bone tissue lacks sufficient blood supply, it can weaken and collapse, eventually leading to arthritis. Certain diseases may also trigger this process.

Hip problems in childhood can also play a role later in life. Even if these issues are treated early, they may alter the normal growth and shape of the hip joint, making arthritis more likely to develop in adulthood.

ABOUT THE SURGERY

What is hip replacement surgery?

Hip replacement is surgery to remove damaged sections of the hip joint and replace them. Replacement parts are usually made of metal, ceramic and hard plastic. This artificial joint, called a prosthesis, helps reduce pain and improve function. Hip replacement also is called total hip arthroplasty.

Who is a good candidate for this surgery?

Patients who are active, in good physical shape, and younger are often the best candidates for an anterior approach hip replacement. A good candidate for hip replacement is someone with osteoarthritis or another condition that has damaged the cartilage in the hip joint.

What is the best age to have a hip replacement?

The best age for hip replacement typically falls between 60 and 80 years. However, patients younger than 60 or older than 80 can also be suitable candidates depending on their specific conditions.

Most experts recommend delaying hip replacement until at least the 60s if possible.

Advances in surgical techniques mean that people as young as 40 can benefit from the procedure if necessary.

Generally, surgeries are most common between the ages of 50 and 80, but the timing should be based on individual health needs rather than age alone.

HOW TO PREPARE

How to prepare for hip replacement surgery?

To prepare for knee replacement surgery, consider the following steps

Recovery after hip replacement surgery abroad

Most patients notice significant improvement already on the first day after surgery, as arthritic pain is gone and they feel more comfortable.

Some mild discomfort at the incision site is normal but can be effectively managed with pain medication.

Eating and drinking are usually allowed on the same day.

After the first day, patients are typically able to sit on the edge of the bed and even stand. By the third day, with assistance from the clinic staff, they can start walking slowly using crutches.

By about one week after surgery, most of the pain has disappeared and painkillers are no longer needed, though certain movement restrictions may still apply.

Four to six weeks after the procedure, patients are generally able to return to a more active lifestyle.
